The transition from their home to their preferred care setting can be so overwhelming that it may feel like the biggest challenge is done.
But the difficult conversation and the convincing, if you had to, is not all there is to it. For anyone to have to move from the home they’ve always known, whatever age they are, is more difficult than it looks like on the outside.
Thus, at our adult facility in California at Terrace Gardens, we like to emphasize the ways the family and loved ones can support their elderly loved one in the run-up to the big move. They include:
- Reassuring them
This is the time to reassure your senior loved one that being on another home does not mean that you will forget them. If possible, tell them of the specifics of your plans to visit so they can have something to look forward to. - Letting them take control as much as possible
Packing up can be a particularly vulnerable time for your seniors as it’s also a time for them to reminisce so make sure that you make it as comfortable for them as possible. - Offering your assistance
While you should let them decide as much as possible, you should also make sure to let them know you are there for them. You can offer to assist on their personal care needs or pick up something for them at the pharmacy or store.
We hope the above tips help you make the transition easier.
